NEVADA CITY
Nevada City was founded in 1849 and got its name after the Spanish word for snow due to the snow falling at that elevation. It was once the third largest city in California with a population of 10,000. Nevada City rapidly became one of the largest and wealthiest mining towns in California.
In the 1850’s, Nevada City’s wealth from the gold rush began to dwindle and as prospectors moved in search of new claims and stories of gold and wealth, a quiet and quaint city emerged. In 1856 and 1863, two large fires destroyed most of the town. However, the strong will of the people of Nevada City re-built the town completely, not once but twice, resulting in the beautiful east coast architecture you see today.
There are many events to participate in when you visit Nevada City. Some of the highlights are – Mardi Gras, Nevada City Bicycle Classic, First Friday Art walks, Soapbox Derby, Pioneer Park Picnic Pops Concerts, Summer Nights, Nevada County Fair and Victorian Christmas.
